The End of the West as We Knew It?
Panel Discussion
in the frame of program focus »4 Years After Hanau«
In what kind of society do we live today? What does #5JahreNachHanau tell us about the state of the “democratic West”—the political and cultural self-understanding that was regarded as stable for decades? Are we already living in a state of transition in which authoritarian and fascistic dynamics are being normalized? How did we get here? And what does this mean for progressive actors whose work is being massively attacked right now?
Under the working title of “5 Years After Hanau: The End of the West as We Knew It?”, Ceren Türkmen will discuss with Sarah-Lee Heinrich, Mario Candeias and N.N. after the screening of the short films “Tiefenschärfe” (2017, 14 min.) and “Dunkelfeld” (2020, 15 min.). At issue are ruptures, right-wing-authoritarian shifts, “social anti-fascism,” processes of de-democratization, political-cultural spaces, and the question of how the capacity to act can be redefined under these conditions.
Film Program
Tiefenschärfe
D 2017, Direction: Alex Gerbaulet & Mareike Bernien, 14 Min.
The film works with the traces left behind by the NSU in the cities—those inconspicuous places where three people were murdered. A shifted image axis and voice-over texts create a space in which the shock that has become inscribed in (post)migrant reality becomes visible.

Dunkelfeld
D 2020, Direction: Ole-Kristian Heyer, Patrick Lohse, Marian Mayland, 15 Min.
The film goes back to the arson attack in Duisburg-Wanheimerort in 1984, in which seven people died. It reveals how quickly the authorities found a harmless explanation—and how relatives and survivors still have to fight today to have their perspective heard, let alone institutionally recognized.
