A damaged hand puppet shits as unabashedly as it eats. It has a lock on its ventriloquist. As the embodiment of its chronical inflammatory bowel disease, it has just one thing in mind: He’s going to bleed! The unequal duo sparks a relationship thriller on undigested rests, fuels speechlessness in the face of egregious stories of sickness and plunges into a shit storm on working at the theater. For his most recent project, the performance and action artist Hendrik Quast learned the art of ventriloquism to deal with the chronical inflammatory bowel disease Colitis ulcerosa. In a conversation with the disease, new ways of speaking about and depicting chronical illness as well as unusual spaces of humor are developed for the ill and healthy audience. Everyday experiences with bowel diseases are brought to the stage with outstanding entertainment value, and questions of visibly and invisibly marked, chronically ill bodies are renegotiated. Hendrik Quast declares the bowels a stage and asks who actually has the prerogative of interpretation over the sick body—medicine, the patient or the illness itself.
