A chickistic tea dance
The heterosexual couple gazes deep into each others eyes. The man leads the woman. She pines for him, he looks down on her. She is dreamy, letting the man guide her. He spins her around. Her body is in a ball gown, his in a tuxedo. We are familiar with these images from innumerable films. CHICKS* work through the gender roles inscribed in couple dance. They recall their own proms and search for role models in dance, for lesbian and queer dance pairs, for dancing friends, leading women and men abandoning themselves, for consensual encounters in dance.
