Performance
The British artist Ant Hampton and the Argentine actress Rita Pauls hitchhiked across Germany together. With the little bit of German that they acquired, they asked the people who took them along: „What really needs to be said, in your opinion?“ They told them that they would like to record the answer to then learn it by heart in order to familiarize themselves with the German language and the country they feel attached to. Because of her German grandparents, who fled from the Nazis to Argentina in the 1930s, Rita Pauls has a German passport. Hampton is seeking German citizenship for private reasons and not least on account of Brexit.
In „Mund-Stück“, the answers are recounted orally by Ant und Rita – literally, with all pauses for breath and thought, the sounds and accents of the voices. They speak synchronously and try (in vain) to control their bodily reactions to this flood of new sounds, the vocal exercises and the recited opinions.
