The 23rd Biennale Aktuelle Musik focuses on music of the moment: instant music!

In terms of expression and outcome, improvisation becomes a snapshot of an artistic and social situation. It is not least the presence of the musicians that creates a NOW that is unrepeatable, but no less compelling.

For the 2026 festival, the pgnm will collaborate with international protagonists of improvisational music, including the Styrian Improvisation Orchestra from Graz: A total of 18 musicians will travel here from Austrian Styria to improvise with musicians from Bremen. The pgnm thus continues its cultural exchange titled »ALPENGLOW 10 – Styria meets Bremen« in cooperation with the Styrian Association for New and Improvised Music.

Further »facets« are offered by different kinds of music from the past and present that include improvisation as a crucial element in their creation or performance.

Reflective lectures and panel discussions with the invited artists, composers, and performers complement the concert program and place the pieces in their (sociopolitical) contexts.

Funded by the Bremen Senator for Culture, the Karin und Uwe Hollweg Stiftung, the Waldemar Koch Stiftung, the Federal Ministry for Housing, Arts, Culture, Media and Sport (Austria), the City of Graz and the State of Styria.

Supported by Schwankhalle, St. Petri Cathedral, Städtische Galerie Bremen and Klavierhaus Helmich.
