In this issue of #variousartists, Aron Woldamlak meets the artist and curator Nuray Demir. For her interdisciplinary projects, she establishes temporary ensembles of persons from various fields, resulting in collaborative work based on a critical view of social exclusions and complex hierarchical conditions. With artistic irritations and counter-positions, she formulates imaginative and empowering spaces for social equality.
The video work ›Semiotics of the Kunstfeld‹ developed together with George Demir in the frame of the academy ›Zeige Deine Klasse‹ of the Impulse Theatre Festival 2020 is dedicated to the classist mechanisms of the Western art world. Which canons and tastes are defined as cultural capital by art and science institutions? And can only those who have learned the symbols, signs, gestures, and activities of the club early on become its members?
Based on these and other examples drawn from Nuray Demir’s artistic practice, the online talk deals with the experiences gained in engaging with class and classism in the art world. How and by whom are class differences artistically addressed? And what role does class play in the diversification of the cultural landscape?
