Presented by steptext dance project
To mark International Women‘s Day on March 8, steptext dance project invites the audience to a guest performance and workshop by and with dancer and choreographer Nora Amin.
Her solo MY DANCE sensitively reflects on the mechanisms of power behind the exoticization of dance and dancers using the example of so-called belly dance. Slowly feeling her way forward, Nora Amin returns the voyeuristic and exoticizing external perspective to the individual self-assertion of the dancing body: a shift in focus towards the dancer, who determines her own dance and also emphazises freedom and space for femininity.
The dance solo, which Nora Amin performs together with the musician Ehab Abdellatif, is a personal testimony by the author, choreographer and director, who traces her own history between Egypt and Germany and exposes the insincerity of all role ascriptions from the outside. An invitation to rediscover dance as art and decolonial, anti-patriarchal practice.
»Dance from the Heart«
On Sunday, March 9, Nora Amin will host a dance workshop (open to all levels)
The workshop focuses on creating dance from a perspective of empowerment and healing. Based on her choreographic signature, and her extensive research to decolonise Baladi dance practise, which resulted in her acclaimed book DANCE OF THE PERSECUTED (Matthes & Seitz, 2021), Nora offers an intensive workshop for self-defined women of all cultures, ages and abilities. The workshop is a training to re-understand dance as an expression of identity, as a healing medium, and as a transformative power.
“This can be a good place to unlock the past, embrace the present and celebrate what is yet to come in the spirit of feminist empowerment.”
On March 8 at 5 p.m., the Africa Network Bremen is offering cooking and eating together before the performance. A group of women from the ANB will prepare couscous in various flavors. Everyone who would like to is cordially invited to join in the meal and conversation. The Afrika-Netzwerk Bremen e.V. is committed to the concerns and issues that Africans in Bremen and their friends, with and without an African migration background, are interested in.
