As a mother and expert on forensics, the Belgian theatre-maker Marijs Boulogne crocheted and embroidered a newborn baby with all the frills out of cotton and silk threads over a period of ten months: skin, bowels, muscles on bones made of salt and flour. The creation turns out perfect, but the baby is not alive. In >The Anatomy Lesson<, Boulogne examines her doll with an endoscope to establish the cause of death. The spectators experience a fascinating journey to the inside of a newborn that engages with the themes of life and death in a both affectionate and bizarre manner, revealing the wonder of life by means of a crocheted stillborn child.
