Ibsen’s John Gabriel Borkman has made a fortune by running his own mines, with speculations and trading stocks. For career reasons, he married the wrong woman. He was later sentenced to five years in prison for hundreds of cases of fraud against his clients and investors. After being released, he lived in isolation in the old ceremonial hall of his estate.

While Ibsen used a real biography for his drama, Markus&Markus take the drama and find a real biography: They met a man who lost his job as a mineworker when the last shaft in Salzgitter was closed. He became a financial juggler and lost everything, even his freedom. After being released from jail, he locked himself up in his house and became a compulsive hoarder. Markus&Markus gained entrance to this room and accompanied Borkman outdoors for the first time. At long last, the first part of the Ibsen trilogy!
